Online Student Tips

The information, tips and resources on this page are designed to ease your transition when you choose to take an online class or a hybrid class with an online component.

5 Tips for Getting Started

  1. Create Your Workspace: The key to successful online learning is to work in a location with minimal distractions. Some find it helpful to create a space dedicated solely to doing classwork. Verify that you have access to all the equipment you'll need (a computer or laptop, mobile device, Internet connection, web cam, etc.). Double check that you have all the required programs and/or applications. Is everything up-to-date and in proper working order?
  2. Get Organized: It's easy to let time slip away from you when you're learning remotely. You stream one episode of your favorite show, and before you know it, you've watched five episodes and only have an hour left to finish an assignment. Creating and sticking to a schedule will help prevent that from happening! Treat your online classes just like face-to-face classes by dedicating the same amount of virtual time to them that you would have spent in-person. Not so confident in your time management skills? Not to worry — Career Services can help.
  3. Communicate: Be sure to keep in touch with your instructors as you navigate your online coursework. You can do so via the inbox feature in Canvas, or through your Titan student email account.
  4. Take Care of Yourself: As you practice safe social distancing, it's more important than ever to get a good night's sleep, to eat a well-balanced diet and to exercise. Drink plenty of water, be sure to take regular breaks from your screen and try to spend some time outdoors each day. You'll notice a definite difference!
  5. Ask for Help: We've said it before, and we'll say it again. We're all in this together! Don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it. Having technical trouble? Reach out to IT support. Need to explore tutoring? Check out an EFSC Academic Success Center (they have virtual options, too!) Questions about an assignment? Get in touch with your instructor. Your classmates are also a great resource. Now is an excellent time to form a virtual study group!
