Emergency Medical Technician ATD
Train for a career as an EMT with a one-semester program that prepares ambulance attendants and others involved in pre-hospital rescue and emergency care of the sick or injured.
Eastern Florida’s Emergency Medical Technician Applied Technology Diploma (ATD) qualifies graduates to take the State of Florida certification exam through the National Registry of EMTs.
EMT certification can be a pathway to a challenging career and a launching pad to additional higher education credentials and career opportunities such as Paramedic and Firefighter programs.
EFSC’s EMT program is offered each semester (Spring, Summer, Fall) and includes both day and night options:
- Exact semester start and end dates can be found on the EFSC Academic Calendar.
- Day Class: Two days per week, Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday from 9 AM - 4 PM (Fall & Spring, 16 weeks) and 8 AM - 5 PM (Summer, 12 weeks)
- Night Class (Fall & Spring Terms Only if Minimum Enrollment is met): Three nights a week between Monday–Thursday from 6 - 10 PM. (Fall & Spring only, 16 weeks). The three days vary between semesters.
Clinical Hours Equal Hands-On Experience
Hands-on experience is a great way to understand EMT employment options and helps you decide what path you want to take in your career. In addition to attending class each week, plan on dedicating 8-12 hours per week to complete your clinical hours, which cover four main areas: a hospital, a private ambulance company (non-emergency patient transport), Brevard County Fire Rescue, and a city fire department (911 first responders).

EMT Program Costs & Financial Aid Eligibility
Estimated expenses for Eastern Florida’s EMT ATD program for Florida residents are about $2,400, including tuition and fees. While the short program length (total credit hours) of this diploma program makes it ineligible for Federal financial aid, EMT students may be eligible for sponsorship through Brevard County Fire Rescue that can cover all tuition, lab fees, uniforms, and textbooks for both this EMT program and EFSC's Fire Fighter certificate program, as well as the bunker gear for the fire academy.
Students also are able to use Florida Bright Futures Scholarships, Florida Prepaid, or the Nelnet Payment Plan toward the tuition and can also apply for Titan Scholarships funded by the EFSC Foundation, scholarships awarded by outside organizations, and/or Veterans Educational Benefits.
Why study in the EMT Program at EFSC?
Hands-on training takes place in the Emergency Medical Services lab in EFSC's Public Safety Institute. The Lab includes a full-size ambulance and patient simulators, letting students practice the skills they are learning before they begin clinical hours in the community.
Students are making connections with local agencies during those rotations, which can often lead to employment opportunities. This video from a virtual College for a Day presentation offers a program overview and tour of the EMT training facilities.

Earning the EMT diploma can lead to certification and prepare students for further education to become a paramedic or to add EMT skills as a firefighter. The EMT certification is also required as part of EFSC's Emergency Medical Services Associate in Science degree which can help with career advancement into management positions. The A.S. degree also prepares students to apply for EFSC's Organizational Management Bachelor of Applied Sciences (BAS) degree, which includes a specialization in Public Safety Management.
