EFSC Returns to Normal Operations; Classes Resume Monday Following Hurricane Helene

Monday, September 30, 2024 - Final Update

Eastern Florida State College has returned to normal operations. All classes, on-campus and online, plus activities scheduled for Monday, September 30 will resume as scheduled.

EFSC’s Emergency Management Team completed its evaluation of each EFSC campus on Friday and determined the college could return to full operations after Thursday’s impacts from Hurricane Helene.

In anticipation of these potential impacts and because the safety of student and employees is of utmost importance, college leadership made the decision to close all EFSC campuses on Thursday, September 26. All EFSC classes, including on-campus and online courses, and all EFSC events were canceled on Thursday.

Students should contact their instructors for questions about the impact of the cancellation on class assignments.

Classes scheduled for Wednesday evening, September 25th met as scheduled.

Earlier on Wednesday, Eastern Florida State College’s Emergency Management Team met with college president Dr. Jim Richey to discuss the potential impacts of Hurricane Helene and made the Thursday closure decision.

A Tropical Storm Warning had been issued for Brevard County and officials predicted heavy rain and wind gusts up to 45-55 miles mph. Additionally, the potential for tornadic activity existed for our area.

Though Helene made landfall in Florida’s Panhandle, the wind field was one of the largest in recent history, stretching over 230 miles east from the center.

Hurricane season runs through November 1, so remember to review your storm preparations.
