Emergency Medical Services - Associate Degree

EFSC's Emergency Medical Services A.S. degree includes credits earned from Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Paramedic certificate programs, such as those offered by Eastern Florida.

Students who have completed those two programs are eligible for state certification as an EMT and Paramedic, along with the certificate credits articulating toward the A.S. degree.

Adding the general education courses and technical electives required for the associate degree, provides an educational credential that can help working professionals with career advancement or prepare them to move on to a bachelor program such as EFSC's Organizational Management Bachelor of Applied Science - Public Safety Management Specialization.

Graduates from EFSC’s EMS A.S. program with the required state certifications can work as basic or advanced providers in ambulances, hospital emergency rooms, intensive care units, and emergency helicopter transport agencies. Graduates may also be eligible for management positions.

Emergency Medical Services A.S. COURSE CURRICULUM

Students must complete at least 25% of the degree curriculum's required credit hours through Eastern Florida State College.

If you plan to apply with an EMT or Paramedic certificate from another institution, please review your situation with the advisor before applying.

Emergency Medical Services A.S. Admissions Information

Admission to EFSC’s EMS A.S. degree program is done through the college's general application process and includes meeting all general college requirements, including satisfying the placement testing requirement, either through an exception or by taking a common placement test such as the PERT.

Students seeking the degree must be certified in Florida as an EMT and have completed a COAEMSP-accredited paramedic program. EFSC students who are close to graduating from the Paramedic program and who want to continue on to the A.S. degree should discuss that option with the advisor as they would not need to apply again to EFSC, but instead satisfy any testing requirements and work with the advisor on a major change after completing the Paramedic certificate.

Brief Costs & Financial Aid Eligibility

Because students adding Eastern Florida’s EMS A.S. degree will transfer in 54 credits from the required EMT and Paramedic certificates, the tuition for the remaining 19 required credit-hours is just under $2,000 for students who are Florida residents. That does not include any lab fees or course materials.

The A.S. degree program is eligible for Federal financial aid and all students are encouraged to apply for scholarships as both types of aid can help reduce the out-of-pocket costs.

Why add an associate degree?

Graduates of Eastern Florida’s EMS A.S. degree program are prepared with the critical thinking skills, confidence, and emergency medicine knowledge necessary to succeed in this growing field.

Some management positions may require a bachelor degree. EFSC's Bachelor of Applied Science degrees are designed for streamlined transfer with an Associate in Science degree as students fill in the added general education requirements during the bachelor program. Discuss your career goals with the program advisor who can help with planning.
