Medical Imaging: Sonography - BAS Specialization
If you're a licensed sonographer looking to advance your education, Eastern Florida State College offers two options in the Medical Imaging: Sonography BAS Specialization. You can choose between the Vascular Sonography or the Adult and Pediatric Cardiac Sonography tracks.
EFSC understands the importance of ongoing education in the imaging field, and this specialization is designed for imaging professionals who already have an associate degree in Sonography from an accredited college.
Medical Imaging: Sonography is one of the six specialization choices available in the Applied Health Sciences Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) degree program at EFSC. You can earn the degree once and must choose one track, and either specialize in Cardiac or Vascular sonography.
Medical Imaging: Sonography BAS Tracks - Course Curriculum
In this program, you'll attend classes at the Health Sciences Institute on EFSC's Melbourne Campus, while also gaining hands-on, practical experience in off-campus clinical settings. To accommodate busy schedules, core courses and technical electives for both tracks are also available online, providing additional flexibility.
In the Cardiac Track, you'll learn about professional behavior in adult and pediatric cardiac clinical settings, distinguish normal and abnormal electrocardiography, identify abnormal and normal conditions in the adult cardiac cycle, evaluate pediatric cardiac case studies, understand pediatric cardiac development, and prepare for certification exams.

In the Vascular Track, you'll learn how to evaluate the arterial and venous systems and focus on professional behavior in a vascular clinical setting and develop the ability to differentiate vascular pathology from normal vascular anatomy.
Medical Imaging: Sonography BAS Tracks - Admissions Information
To apply for the Adult and Pediatric Cardiac Sonography or Vascular Sonography bachelor tracks, you need to have current ARDMS registration (in any specialty), ARRT certification in Sonography Primary, or CCI certification.
You must also hold an associate degree in Sonography from a regionally accredited college. If you're a credentialed diagnostic medical sonographer with a Sonography associate degree from a CAAHEP-accredited school through the JRCDMS, you can receive up to 60 credits toward EFSC's Medical Imaging: Sonography program.
To apply for the program, follow the general bachelor enrollment steps, including meeting the application deadlines. Your college transcripts and licensure will be evaluated during this process. We recommend working with a bachelor advisor to ensure that your qualifications meet the specialized requirements of this program.
Additional credits beyond the 60 awarded from the A.S. degree may be granted on a case-by-case basis. Factors considered include program accreditation, program length and content, your performance in the program, and your professional credentials. The transfer of general education credits earned at other colleges and universities will be evaluated according to EFSC's transfer credit policy.
Brief Costs and Financial Aid Eligibility
You can complete the program's two years of courses for approximately $7,200 in base tuition if you're a Florida resident. However, please note that this cost doesn't include expenses for course materials and lab fees, which are additional.
With an associate degree required, you'll need to complete an additional 60 credits — and approximately 39 of those credits will be upper-level courses on the tuition fee schedule.
Financial aid and scholarships are available for students pursuing the Applied Health Sciences - Medical Imaging: Sonography Specialization at EFSC. We highly recommend that you apply for federal aid, Titan Scholarships provided by the EFSC Foundation, and community-based external scholarships to help with your educational expenses.

For both tracks of the Sonography BAS Specialization, the curriculum includes shared courses from the Applied Health Sciences degree, along with specialized required and elective classes. Explore electrocardiography (ECG), covering normal and abnormal cardiac anatomy, physiology, electrical conduction, and how to interpret ECG waveforms and identify abnormalities.
Gain comprehensive knowledge of congenital heart disease (CHD) and its echocardiographic evaluation in pediatric patients.
Learn about the circulatory system, including anatomy, physiology, and hemodynamics. Explore sonographic imaging, vascular assessment techniques, and Doppler examination principles.

Earn A Certificate In Addition to the Bachelor's Degree
You can only earn the Sonography Bachelor of Applied Science Specialization once, so you'll need to decide whether to focus on adding cardiac or vascular skills. However, if you're interested in both, you also have the option to apply for one of EFSC's Advanced Technical Certificate (ATC) sonography programs either before or after completing your bachelor's degree. These ATCs are available in both Vascular Sonography and Adult and Pediatric Cardiac Sonography.
