Biotechnology - BAS Specialization
If you have a background in chemical technology, medical laboratory technology, chemistry, or biotechnology, EFSC's Biotechnology BAS Track is designed specifically for you! This program is also open to students who have earned associate degrees in these fields from Eastern Florida State College.
The program aims to enhance your professional knowledge and skills in communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, and research and leadership theories.
Upon graduation, you can expect to qualify for various positions, such as clinical lab technologist, molecular biologist, research biologist, pharmaceutical research and sales representative, health economics promoter, or laboratory animal technician.
The program offers advanced science courses in biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, lab animals, and research methods. These courses provide hands-on experience in laboratory settings and focus on disciplines relevant to quality assurance in medical labs, biotechnology, biopharmaceutical, and biomedical device industries.
Biotechnology is one of the six specialization offered under EFSC's Applied Health Sciences Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) degree program. You can earn the degree once and must choose a track.
Biotechnology BAS Track - Course Curriculum
In this program, you'll explore and analyze biological processes at different organizational levels. You'll develop skills in writing technical biological and biomedical papers, understand essential biology concepts, apply laboratory skills for biomedical systems, evaluate historical developments and research, analyze scientific data and literature, and utilize scientific methods in both lab and field-based inquiry.

Biotechnology BAS Track - Admissions Information
If you're interested in the Biotechnology Specialization, the admissions process follows the general steps for enrolling in a bachelor's degree program at EFSC. It's important to be aware of upcoming deadlines to apply. Admissions for the Biotechnology Track are available in the Spring, Summer, and Fall Terms.
To be eligible for this program, you must have earned an Associate in Science (A.S.) or Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree from a regionally accredited college. Please note that an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree does not meet the minimum eligibility requirements. If you hold an AAS degree and are interested in transferring to a BAS program, consult with a bachelor advisor for more information.
Before entering the program, we suggest completing the following courses with a grade of "C" or better: General Chemistry 1 and 2 with Lab (CHML 1045 and 1046), Organic Chemistry 1 and 2 with Lab (CHML 2010 and 2011), and General Biology 1 and 2 (BSCC 1010 and 1011).
Although these courses aren't mandatory prerequisites for admission, having them completed beforehand can facilitate a smoother transition into higher-level classes and accelerate your progress through the degree. Be sure to stay in touch with a bachelor advisor for guidance on your career and course pathways!
Brief Costs and Financial Aid Eligibility
As a resident of Florida, you have the advantage of accessing EFSC's affordable in-state tuition for this program. It can be completed for approximately $7,200 in base tuition, which doesn't include the additional expenses of course materials or lab fees.
As part of the required associate degree you'll have 60 transfer credits, so will need to complete an additional 60 credit-hours for the program. Out of these credits, around 39 will be allocated to upper-level courses according to the tuition fee schedule.
To help with the costs of the Biotechnology BAS Specialization program, there are various financial aid and scholarship options available. We recommend applying for Federal aid and Titan Scholarships provided by the EFSC Foundation — and also explore external scholarships offered by the community to support your educational expenses.
Biotechnology Courses You Would Take
The Biotechnology Track curriculum includes courses that are common to all six specializations of the Applied Health Sciences degree, as well as specific required and elective classes tailored to this specialization.
It's crucial to be aware that the availability of bachelor-level classes can fill up rapidly. To secure the classes you want and ensure they're delivered in your preferred method, it's important to plan ahead and register for your courses promptly.
Here are a few examples of the courses you can expect to take:
Get hands-on experience performing common strategies and techniques used in modern biochemistry, with a focus on the necessary analyses for a biomedical application.
Learn the care and handling of laboratory animals, the use of animals as research models, and the history of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
Explore the treatment of microorganisms including archaeans, bacteria, viruses, protists, protozoans, and certain fungi.
Learn the fundamental properties of inheritance in eukaryotic organisms, emphasizing examples in human beings.
