Registration Open for EFSC Youth Golf Camp
April 24, 2019
For the 27th straight year, Eastern Florida State College is hosting the P.J. Wilson and Henry Scott Youth Golf Camp June 10-20, open to all local boys and girls ages 10-17.
The camp will teach the basic skills of golf, including golf course etiquette, conduct and sportsmanship, as well as values for successful living such as self-confidence, responsibility and goal setting.
EFSC staff and volunteers will offer the camp free of charge June 10 to 20, Mondays through Thursdays from 9 to 11 a.m. at the EFSC Fred Gay Golf Academy at 3570 State Road 524 in Cocoa.
“The EFSC Summer Youth golf camp has become an institution not only for Brevard County, but also Central Florida," said Eastern Florida State College golf coach Jamie Howell, who helps organize and run the camp. "The word has traveled throughout Central Florida about what a good camp this is for everyone who attends."
Pre-registration is mandatory by June 7 via the form available in the "Camps" link under the Fan Zone menu at the efsctitans.com website.
Parents and interested or registered campers can also attend an orientation session from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 5 at the Williams Student Center, Building 11, Community Dining Room on the Cocoa Campus, 1519 Clearlake Road. Refreshments will be provided and campers can also register that night.
The camp started in 1992 with assistance from its namesakes, Scott and Wilson, two African American golf professionals in Brevard County. For years it was best known as the Minority Golf Camp because of its efforts to reach out to minorities, but it's always been open to all young people.
"One of our proudest moments is welcoming back former attendees as well as scholarship recipients who share their experience with today’s campers," said Howell.
"Our volunteers continually arrive looking forward to taking part and the camp has become somewhat of a pilgrimage for those who mark their calendar well in advance each year in anticipation of renewing old friendships and acquaintances as well as providing the opportunity for today’s youth to learn about the game of golf.”
