Eastern Florida State College student Bethany Weaver has received a prestigious Newman Civic Fellowship for excellence in the classroom and community.

EFSC student Bethany WeaverWeaver, a student on the Palm Bay campus, is among 262 students who comprise the 2019-20 fellowship winners.

Campus Compact, a Boston-based non-profit organization working to advance the public purposes of higher education, gives the honor.

“Bethany represents the very best of our engaged students who combine significant service to the community, leadership and outstanding academic work,” said EFSC President Dr. Jim Richey.

“She is a great example of the spirit of Eastern Florida State College, and we congratulate her on this very impressive achievement.”

Weaver is an Honors student, Core Scholar and Citizen Scholar. She is active in student government and serves as a Peer Tutor and Green Dot Ambassador.

She is also deeply involved in community efforts that address poverty, homeless and the environment.

Her civic work includes helping deliver vital supplies to orphanages in crisis in Haiti and Honduras.

The experience gave Weaver what she called a “rush of global reality” and inspiration to spend her life serving others.

The Newman Civic Fellowship, named for Campus Compact co-founder Frank Newman, is a one-year experience emphasizing personal, professional, and civic growth for students who have shown leadership and problem solving.

Fellows have a variety of learning and networking opportunities, including a national conference of Newman Civic Fellows in partnership with the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the U.S. Senate.

The fellowship also provides fellows with access to apply for exclusive scholarship and post-graduate opportunities.
