EFSC Holding Active Shooter Training on Melbourne Campus

The Eastern Florida State College Public Safety Institute will hold active shooter training this weekend for Brevard County law enforcement officers as part of its advanced training programs.

About 25 officers will participate in the training Friday, June 15 and Saturday, June 16 on the college’s Melbourne Campus.

The exercise will take place inside the Public Safety Institute and adjacent Dr. Joe Lee Smith Teaching Center with instructors running a variety of active shooter scenarios.

The college is closed Fridays and Saturdays so no students will be on campus. Signs outside the two buildings will say that police training is in progress.

“We want everyone to know this is a training exercise and there is no cause for alarm,” said John Glisch, the college’s Associate Vice President for Communications.

“It will provide officers from eight agencies an excellent opportunity to work together in realistic scenarios, making it invaluable training for them.”

Officers from the following agencies will participate:

Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, Titusville Police, Cocoa Police, Melbourne Police, Palm Bay Police, Cocoa Beach Police, Satellite Beach Police and Indian Harbour Beach Police.

This is the first time the college has provided the training, which came at the request of local law enforcement officials.

The Public Safety Institute holds advanced courses for active duty officers as part of its mission to provide continued police training.

The institute also trains new officers in its Law Enforcement Academy and is home to a Corrections Academy, EMT/Paramedic and firefighter training and programs in other criminal justice fields.
