EFSC Step Up Program Wins Major State Award
May 29, 2018
An Eastern Florida State College program designed to help at-risk students graduating from high school succeed in higher education has earned a top honor from the Association of Florida Colleges.
The association’s Student Development Commission named EFSC’s “Step Up” pilot program as winner of the 2018 Exemplary Practice Award, given annually for innovation and exceptional student services.
“The award is a testament to the strong support the students received from the college’s faculty and staff, community members and each other,” said Christine Warner, EFSC’s Director of Student Recruitment. “It was a true team effort.”
The initiative, led by Tracy Glidden, an EFSC Student Recruitment Coordinator, offered a structured pathway for at-risk students in Brevard County graduating from high school in May 2016.
Twelve students participated in the pilot effort, undergoing a rigorous schedule that included full-time enrollment at EFSC, tutoring sessions, advising meetings, mentorships and other support services.
The students successfully completed their first semester in Fall 2016 with nearly 22 credits each and an average group GPA of 3.09, giving many a jump start to successful college careers.
Many of the students have since graduated and gained acceptance to nursing and other programs.
