Natural Gas Odor Leads to Building Evacuation

October 2, 2014

The Irene H. Burnett Science Building on the Eastern Florida State College Cocoa campus was safely evacuated Thursday evening after a suspected natural gas leak.

No one was injured and classes in the building, also known as Building 7, were cancelled for the night.

The incident occurred about 5:50 p.m. when a faint smell of natural gas was detected. Campus security immediately responded, shutting off the gas and evacuating the building that contained about 50 students and faculty at the time.

The Cocoa Fire Department arrived and firefighters continued inspecting each room in the building Thursday night.

No classes are normally held in the building Friday.

The college will post information on its website about plans to resume classes Monday.
