EFSC and NASA Partner for Special Training

August 5, 2014

Eastern Florida State College (EFSC) and NASA Rocket U have partnered to provide Kennedy Space Center engineers with a one week Comprehensive Welding Technology Training Workshop.

Welding class from summer 2014

The workshop provided instruction in basic welding techniques, fundamentals of metallurgy, Stick, TIG and MIG applications, grinding applications and much more.

Rocket U was developed to help civil service and contractor engineers expand their skill set in flight systems engineering and learn to better manage design programs. The insight into welding techniques allows engineers to communicate more effectively with front line welders.

Ken Cox, associate professor of Welding Technology at EFSC, and Tom Merry, Welding Technology Lab Specialist, guided the students through the processes, weldments, science and math applications, and fabrication methods used in the welding industry.

To date, EFSC Corporate Services and NASA Rocket U have facilitated three workshops covering classroom theory and hands-on lab exercises for over 45 professionals. The most recent session was this summer and they hope to plan future sessions.
