The camp begins at 9 a.m., June 17 at the BCC Fred Gay Golf Academy and Driving Range 3570 SR 524 in Cocoa. It will run from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday through Thursday through June 27.

The free program teaches students the basic skills of golf including golf course etiquette, conduct and sportsmanship as well as well as values for successful living.

The camp is designed to help build the participants’ self-confidence and provide guidance on setting goals and providing support in laying the foundation for positive life directions. Drinks and snacks will be provided at the camp. Students must wear tennis shoes or sneakers. No sandals or flip-flops are allowed.

The camp was begun in 1992 under the guidance of former BCC President Dr. Maxwell King with assistance from Henry Scott and P.J. Wilson, two African American golf professionals in Brevard County. For years it was known as the Minority Golf Camp because of its efforts to reach out to minorities, but it's always been open to all young people.

It continues with the support of BCC President Dr. Jim Richey and Dr. Joe Lee Smith. Smith has been active with the camp since its inception and has volunteered countless hours assisting at the camp.

Don Williams was a key organizer of the camp during the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Wilson passed away in 2000 and Scott in 2002.

Camp instructors this summer are Roosevelt Jackson, Isaac Johnson and BCC head golf coach Jamie Howell.
