BCC Opens Career Center
January 31, 2012
January 31, 2012, Brevard County, FL - The Brevard Community College Cocoa Campus
is now home to an important new resource for area students.
The new Career Planning and Development Center will officially open on Thursday, February
9 during a grand opening ceremony from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the BCC/UCF Joint Use
Library in suite 307.
The center's twin goals are to prepare students for a tough job market where unemployment
remains high, and to make the center a place where Space Coast businesses come to
hire new workers.
Through one-on-one meetings with students, Career Center staff enables students to
jump-start their career planning efforts the moment they walk on any of BCC's four
campuses.
"Students have to prepare themselves for a very difficult job market," says Gloria
Meeks, College-wide Associate Director of Career Planning and Development Center.
"They're not just competing with people in Brevard County they're competing with the
world because we live in a global economy. What we do is offer students professional
development, how to write a resume, how to present themselves and interview. We also
offer them information on job-hunting Web sites and job fairs. We give them the whole
package."
The center offers a wide range of services for employers and organizations in the
community that reflect student/alumni interest and meet employer/organization needs
such as job posting, on-campus job recruitment, internships, job fairs, and interview
facilities.
"Companies are going to hire, and are hiring, but they expect a level of knowledge
from the people applying for the job," says Cathy Cady, Director of Student Recruitment
and Support Services.
"It's equally important for students to focus on career paths as soon as they walk
on campus. Our experts take students "step-by-step" through the process of finding
the career that fits them the best."
