Academic Continuity
Tips for Teaching Online at EFSC During an Unplanned Event
It is always a good idea to be prepared for an event that may result in an unplanned closure that impacts Eastern Florida State College. This requires creative and flexible thinking about how you can support your students in an online environment if necessary.
In times of planned/unplanned events, offering an online class session is a proactive way to maintain academic continuity when meeting face-to-face is not an option. Eastern Florida’s Learning Management System, Canvas, provides solutions that allow faculty to engage with their students in a multitude of ways. Online learning is comprised of many aspects including the dissemination of content, student collaboration, student assignments and/or activities, and communication — all completed virtually within the learning management system.
Below you will find EFSC support contacts and ways you can start migrating your in-class activities into an online format, as well as training and resources that are available to keep you ahead of the game.
Whether you already teach online and want to see what the most up-to-date CANVAS capabilities are, or whether you will be doing your summer classes in an online format for the first time, we are here to help! Canvas Instructor Training (CIT) takes about 3-5 hours to complete on average and is self-paced and facilitated online in EFSC's Canvas Learning Management System. All new instructors are automatically enrolled in CIT and it will appear in their list of courses in Canvas. If you have not yet completed Canvas Instructor Training (CIT) you should do this as soon as possible so you can receive a Canvas course shell to house your course materials online. If you have already completed the training, you are able to access CIT at any time for a refresher.
NOTE: If you do not see Canvas Instructor Training (CIT) in your list of courses in Canvas, contact a member of Academic Technology.
EFSC's Academic Technology (AcTec) team will be offering many webinars throughout the semester. Be sure to check our training calendar to see our full list of upcoming webinars that may be helpful to you.
If you cannot make a webinar at the time it is being offered, webinars are recorded with links posted in the Canvas Instructor Training course in the Additional Resources - Webinar Recordings & Resources module.
All first-time online students must complete the Canvas Student Orientation before full access is available to online courses. Your students can visit the Canvas web page for more information.
You may also refer your students to the Canvas Student Resources site that will be helpful if they are not familiar with Canvas and online learning.
The AcTec Canvas section contains many links that will be helpful as you work to get your content online and in Canvas.
