Dr. ChanJi Kim
Professor of Music and Performing and Visual Arts Department Chair
Dr. ChanJi Kim composes for dance, chamber ensembles, orchestra, multimedia performances, and electroacoustic music. Her research and musical areas of interest include collaboration between composers and choreographers, Korean folk music, and interactive electroacoustic composition. Her works have been performed in Asia, Europe, and North America. Recently, her music was performed by the Nabla ensemble in Rome, Italy and the internationally known Bartók Trio ensemble in Malaga, Spain.
Her major performances include the International Composers and Interactive Artists composition recital at the Symphony Space in New York City; the electroacoustic music concert at the University of Rome, Italy; International Music Days in Constanta, Romania; the International Double Reed Society conference in Indiana; the Berlin New Music Concert performed by Anton Webern Quartet; the R20 (String Orchestra) concert in Wroclaw, Poland; the New Music Society concert in Seoul, Korea; the International New Music Consortium concert series in Bucharest, Romania; the Summer Music Festival in Florence and Assisi, Italy; the Sinfonia Orchestra of Bucharest in Romania; the Florida Electroacoustic Music Festival; Congress of the International Alliance of Women in Music in Miami; the Southeastern Composers Symposium in Alabama; the Annual Women Composer’s festival in Hartford; the Sigma Alpha Iota Women Composer’s Showcase in New Jersey; the Society of Composers, Inc. national conference in North Carolina; the Millennium Dance Concert in New York City; and World Music Days in Timisoara, Romania.
Dr. Kim's awards include the 1999 and 2000 recipient for best composer of the International New Music Consortium, the SCI/ASCAP 2002 student competition regional winner, the A. Didier Graeffe Scholarship (2003-2005), and recipient of the Dean's award for artistic excellence at the College of Fine Arts at the University of Florida from 2003-2006.
Her music has aired on Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) radio in Korea, and her article Music for Clara Schumann was published by Ji-hak Sa in Seoul, Korea. Her music has been published by Calabrese Brothers Music, TrevCo Music, and the Sejong Cultural Society, and is also available on Society of Composers, Inc. CD series by Capstone Record, Piccolo solo CD Mosaic by Emeritus, and on The Era of Modern Bassoon CD Collection by Akashibu Gakufu in Japan.
Dr. Kim is a native of Korea, studied composition and theory at E-Wha Women's University in Korea (BA), film scoring and multimedia at New York University (MA), and electroacoustic music composition at University of Florida (Ph.D). She taught Music Theory, Orchestration, and Music Technology at the University of Florida and has been a staff accompanist for the Dance Department of New York University and the University of Florida. She is a member of the board of directors of ICIA (International Composers and Interactive Artists) and a Professor of Music and Chair of the Performing and Visual Arts Department at Eastern Florida State College.
