Listening and Speaking 1 (IEPX 0100)

This is the first course in a five-course sequence focusing on listening and speaking skills.

Students will develop the ability to understand and participate in brief conversations on familiar topics and practice pronunciation skills.

Reading 1 (IEPX 0120)

This is the first course in a six-course sequence focusing on reading skills.

Students will build vocabulary, dictionary, and comprehension skills. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to read and comprehend short, simple texts.

Grammar and Writing 1 (IEPX 0185)

This is the first course in a six-course sequence focusing on combined grammar and composition skills.

Students will develop basic skills in grammar and writing structures as applied to academic English, practicing these skills in the context of guided discourse and simple paragraphs on personal topics (with an emphasis on logical thought and mechanics).

Listening and Speaking 2 (IEPX 0200)

This is the second course in a five-course sequence focusing on listening and speaking skills.

Students will continue to develop the ability to understand frequently used words, simple phrases, and questions in oral contexts and to respond appropriately. Students will practice specific sound patterns in the lab and apply them when speaking.

Prerequisite: A passing grade in Listening and Speaking 1 (IEPX 0100)

Reading 2 (IEPX 0220)

This is the second course in a six-course sequence focusing on reading skills.

Students will learn systematic skills for vocabulary expansion and reading comprehension. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to read and comprehend short texts.

Prerequisite: A passing grade in Reading 1 (IEPX 0120)

Grammar and Writing 2 (IEPX 0285)

This is the second course in a six-course sequence focusing on combined grammar and composition skills.

Students will develop essential knowledge of grammar and writing as applied to academic English. Students will practice sentence composition in the context of guided discourse on personal topics, with an emphasis on logical thought and mechanics.

Prerequisite: A passing grade in Grammar and Writing 1 (IEPX 0185)

Listening and Speaking 3 (IEPX 0300)

This is the third course in a five-course sequence focusing on listening and speaking skills.

Students will develop the ability to consistently produce consonant and vowel sounds, along with the stress, intonation, and rhythm patterns of American English as encountered in everyday communication. Students will also demonstrate marked improvement in basic speaking and listening skills.

Prerequisite: A passing grade in Listening and Speaking 2 (IEPX 0200)

Reading 3 (IEPX 0320)

This is the third course in a six-course sequence focusing on reading skills.

Students will build on existing vocabulary and comprehension skills by applying critical reading methods. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to read and comprehend basic texts focused on familiar and academic topics.

Prerequisite: A passing grade in Reading 2 (IEPX 0220)

Grammar and Writing 3 (IEPX 0385)

This is the third course in a six-course sequence focusing on combined grammar and composition skills.

Students will build upon and reinforce skills learned in the previous courses. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to write paragraphs on academic topics with simple, compound, and complex sentences using all basic verb tenses.

Prerequisite: A passing grade in Grammar and Writing 2 (IEPX 0285)

Listening and Speaking 4 (IEPX 0400)

This is the fourth course in a five-course sequence focusing on listening and speaking skills.

Students will apply pronunciation, phrasing, and intonation patterns of American English in academic and social settings and will further develop listening skills. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to converse freely on a broad spectrum of topics, use a variety of conversational techniques, and communicate a specific point of view.

Prerequisite: A passing grade in Listening and Speaking 3 (IEPX 0300)

Reading 4 (IEPX 0420)

This is the fourth course in a six-course sequence focusing on reading skills.

Students will build on existing vocabulary and comprehension skills by applying critical reading methods. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to read text on familiar and basic academic topics.

Prerequisite: A passing grade in Reading 3 (IEPX 0320)

Grammar and Writing 4 (IEPX 0485)

This is the fourth course in a six-course sequence focusing on combined grammar and composition skills.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to write grammatical sentences with all the verb tenses in active and passive voices.

Prerequisite: A passing grade in Grammar and Writing 3 (IEPX 0385)

Listening and Speaking 5 (IEPX 0500)

This is the fifth course in a five-course sequence focusing on listening and speaking skills.

Students will develop the communication, organization, and pronunciation skills necessary for effective academic presentation and discussion, with an introduction to lecture note-taking. Group discussions and presentations are an integral part of the course.

Prerequisite: A passing grade in Listening and Speaking 4 (IEPX 0400)

Reading 5 (IEPX 0520)

This is the fifth course in a six-course sequence focusing on reading skills.

Students will build vocabulary and comprehension skills through critical reading methods. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to choose appropriate strategies to read and interpret academic texts.

Prerequisite: A passing grade in Reading 4 (IEPX 0420)

Writing 5 (IEPX 0540)

This is the fifth course in a six-course sequence focusing on combined grammar and composition skills. It should be taken in conjunction with Structure 5 (IEPX 0560).

Students will develop and write five paragraph-form essays in a variety of styles, produce an argumentative essay, and practice using correct grammatical structures, punctuation, and spelling.

Prerequisite: A passing grade in Grammar and Writing 4 (IEPX 0485)

Structure 5 (IEPX 0560)

This is the fifth course in a six-course sequence focusing on combined grammar and composition skills. It should be taken in conjunction with Writing 5 (IEPX 0540).

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to use advanced English grammar in multiple verb tense patterns involving interrogative, declarative, and exclamatory sentences. There is particular emphasis on usage of correct verb tense and common irregular patterns in parts of speech and other areas of grammar.

Reading 6 (IEPX 0620)

This is the sixth course in a six-course sequence focusing on reading skills.

Students will read materials to increase their vocabulary, develop critical thinking skills, improve understanding of American culture, and prepare for entrance into mainstream courses. Upon successful completion of this course, students will comprehend and interpret authentic college-level texts in content areas by applying appropriate reading strategies.

Prerequisite: A grade of 75 or higher in Reading 5 (IEPX 0520)

Advanced Composition (IEPX 0640)

Students will apply advanced grammar skills and precise vocabulary usage to write multi-paragraph essays in various modes. Students will produce a research essay with citations as a main project in this course. Emphasis is given to the clear and logical development of ideas.

Prerequisite: A grade of 75 or higher in Writing 5 (IEPX 0540)

Reading Skills and TOEFL Preparation (IEPX 0980)

This course is designed to improve ESL student reading skills and academic vocabulary, with special focus on TOEFL preparation. Extensive language lab facilities and individualized student-teacher conferencing are available.
